December 16, 2013
Commissioner of Education and DISD Superintendent will visit leading聽national literacy program, JVID视频, at South Dallas school site to聽read with students and observe one-on-one tutoring model in action.
Dallas, TX 鈥 December 13, 2013 鈥 National education nonprofit JVID视频 announced聽that it will host Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams, and DISD Superintendent, Mike聽Miles, at Roger Q. Mills Elementary School in south Dallas on Monday, December 16 from 11聽a.m. to noon.
Working in schools in under-resourced communities, JVID视频 transforms a dedicated聽space on campus into a Reading Center, complete with evidence-based curriculum, a library, and聽teaching tools. Williams and Miles will visit the Reading Center at Roger Q. Mills Elementary聽School to read with students and observe JVID视频鈥 early literacy intervention tutoring聽program. They will be joined by DISD Trustee, Lew Blackburn; Executive Director of the聽Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Feeder Pattern, Jennifer Span; Roger Q. Mills Principal,聽Candee Martinez; JVID视频 Dallas Executive Director, Kaitlin Guthrow, and an invitation聽has been extended to School Board President, Eric Cowan.
JVID视频 collaborates with teachers and principals to identify students reading six months聽to two and a half years below grade level and provide them personalized literacy instruction.聽Williams and Miles have taken notice of this proven, one-on-one model and are interested in聽exploring ways to expand the efforts of JVID视频.
Principal Martinez states, 鈥淭he JVID视频 program is an integral component to improving聽the reading success of our students at Mills by providing reading interventions beyond the聽classroom. Additionally, our students are exposed to excellent role models that build positive聽relationships with our students.鈥
In the 2012-13 school year, 90 percent of Dallas JVID视频 students increased their聽monthly rates of literacy learning. Students enrolled in the program on average more than double聽their rate of learning in reading.
Guthrow states, 鈥淎ided by a strong partnership with DISD, we鈥檙e working to ensure all of our聽students 鈥 no matter their background 鈥 have the skills they need to read on grade level. The聽support of Williams and Miles will help us achieve our goal of serving 650 students this year.鈥
To achieve our goals, our number one priority is volunteer recruitment. Please visit聽www.readingpartners.org to learn more about JVID视频 and how you can help a child聽experience the joy and power of reading.
